The label stable can mean little change or very little attention to change.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Stable is a word with two very different histories behind it. Sometimes it means a situation has genuinely settled and is being watched closely. Sometimes it means nobody has looked recently, and the absence of new information is being read as good news. From the outside these produce the same word, which is why it can be reassuring and hollow at the same time.

When the word matters to you, it is fair to ask when it was last checked and by whom. That is not distrust; it is the question that tells you which of the two meanings you are being handed.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Where do you call something stable when nobody has actually looked?
