Helping is usually imagined as something that costs money, which leaves people who have none feeling they have nothing to give. Full attention is the other currency, and it is rarer than cash. Being listened to properly, without a phone, without the listener assembling their reply, is something most people go weeks without, and it can be offered by anyone. It does not solve the problem, and it changes how the problem is carried.

Give somebody ten uninterrupted minutes this week. No advice unless it is asked for, no turning it into your own story: just the attention, which is more than it sounds like.
