The person hosting the reunion experiences the family through tasks others barely notice.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Hosting means attending a different event from everybody else. While the family is catching up, the host is watching the oven, counting chairs, noticing who has not been spoken to, and working out where somebody will sleep. They come away with a day made of logistics rather than conversations, and often feel oddly absent from their own gathering. The work is what made the day possible and it is also what they missed.

If you are a guest, take one job without being asked and take it properly. Ten minutes in a kitchen gives the host ten minutes at the table, which is the only thing they were short of.
