The neatest answer may belong to the question that was easiest to measure.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Measurement quietly chooses the question. When one thing can be counted and another cannot, the countable one gets studied, reported and acted on, and the tidy result that comes back is a result about the easy part. Nothing dishonest has happened; the neatness is a side effect of what was available. The messier question keeps mattering while producing no numbers to defend itself with.

When a clean figure is handed to you, ask what it left out because it could not be counted. Ask the same of your own reporting. A rough estimate of the important thing often beats a precise one of the trivial.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Are you measuring what matters or what is easy to count?
