Solitude is where borrowed identities become easier to recognize.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Borrowed identities work well in company because they were built for it. The role, the persona, the way of being that fits your circle: all of it holds up under social conditions and reveals itself as costume only when there is nobody it is for. Alone, the borrowed parts feel oddly weightless.

Spend some unstructured time by yourself and notice which parts of your usual self do not show up. Then ask which of those you actually want. Some borrowing is fine and even useful. It is the unexamined kind that gradually replaces whatever you would have been.
