The photograph of an empty street still contains the choices of people outside the frame.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

An empty street is not a natural fact. Somebody decided where the kerb went, which trees were planted, whether there were benches, how wide the pavement should be and who could get along it. All of that is present in the picture while none of the deciders are. Emptiness looks like neutrality and is really the residue of a hundred choices.

Walk somewhere familiar and pick out three things that had to be decided by a person. Ask who benefits from each and who was not considered. Seeing the decisions in the scenery makes it harder to accept things as simply the way they are.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Whose decisions shaped a scene you assumed simply happened that way?
