A meeting’s real agenda sometimes appears in the subjects nobody lets remain open.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Watch what gets closed rather than what gets discussed. A meeting will happily explore ten questions and then handle one topic quickly, with a firm answer, a change of subject or a promise to take it offline, and that reflex shows where the real interest sits. Openness has an edge, and the edge is the information. What is protected tells you more than what is debated.

In your next meeting, keep quiet track of which subject was closed fastest. Ask about it afterwards, privately, of someone who would know. And if you are chairing, notice when your own instinct is to shut something down before it is understood.
