The person who seems untroubled may simply have a different place to put their troubles.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Composure is not the same as ease. Some people work through difficulty at night, or in private, or by staying busy, or with one friend who never appears at work, and what you see is whatever is left over afterwards. Reading calm as an absence of trouble is a common and lonely mistake, for the observer and for the person observed. Nobody’s outside is a full report.

When someone seems fine, ask anyway, once, without pressing. Make it easy to answer honestly by saying something true about your own week. And if you are the composed one, remember that composure can look like not needing anybody.
