A public milestone shows arrival more easily than the private cost of getting there.

Arrival is easy to photograph. The unglamorous years behind a graduation, a new job, a finished house, or a recovery do not fit into the announcement, so what reaches everyone else is the clean version. That gap explains why other people’s lives can look effortless while yours feels like effort. It also explains why congratulation sometimes lands thinly, since nobody is congratulating the part that was hard.
When someone announces good news, ask what the last year of it was like. When you announce something of your own, consider naming one cost out loud.
What did your last visible achievement cost that nobody saw?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
