A pet’s absence can make a home quiet in places nobody knew were sounding.

A house has a soundtrack nobody registers until it stops. Claws on a floor, a bowl being moved, breathing in the next room, the small noises of another creature going about its day fill a space so thoroughly that their absence has a shape. Grief for an animal often arrives through the ears first, in a silence you did not know was being filled. Nothing about that is disproportionate.

Let the quiet be what it is for now rather than covering it quickly. If somebody you know is in this, use the animal’s name, since most people avoid it and the avoidance is lonelier than the mention.
