A public comment can make a private disappointment feel newly exposed.

Something you have made a kind of peace with in private can be reopened by one remark in front of others. The comment may be casual and even well meant, yet it moves a private matter into a room, and now you are managing the disappointment and everyone’s awareness of it at once. That second layer is often the harder one.

Before mentioning somebody else’s setback in company, consider whether they have made it public themselves. If you are on the receiving end, you are allowed to give a short answer and return to it later with the one person you actually want to talk to.
