Some arguments exist because two people are defending different meanings of the same word.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

A surprising number of disagreements are two people using one word for two things. Fair, supportive, soon, reasonable, respect: each carries a different definition for each person, and the argument proceeds with both sides confident and neither addressing the other.

When a discussion keeps circling, stop and define the central word. Ask what it means to them concretely, in terms of what someone would actually do. Say what it means to you. Often the disagreement dissolves at that point, and where it does not, at least the two of you are finally arguing about the same thing.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which repeated argument turns on a word you each define differently?
