The child translating for adults may understand words before understanding the burden around them.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Children who interpret for their families learn the vocabulary quickly and the weight slowly. They can carry a sentence accurately between a parent and a doctor, a landlord or an official, with no way to place what it means, or to know that a grown person would find the room difficult too. The competence is real, and so is the load underneath it. One tends to hide the other.

If a young person is doing this near you, thank them for the specific task and ask an adult to take the heaviest parts. If you once did it yourself, you were carrying more than anyone said at the time.
