Retirement can reveal which pleasures were postponed because they never seemed urgent enough.
STILLNESS
STILLNESS
Work fills a life with things that have deadlines, and pleasures rarely have deadlines. What gets postponed is not what you valued least but what never demanded a date: the long walk, the instrument, the friend two towns over. When the schedule finally empties, that whole postponed list arrives at once, which can feel more disorienting than joyful at first.
You do not have to wait for a last working day to test this. Name one pleasure that has been waiting on a quieter year, and put it in the diary at an ordinary hour. Urgency was never going to arrive on its own.
Which pleasure have you been postponing until some freer year?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
