The player who asks why a move worked is building more than a collection of tricks.

CREATIVITY
Collecting tricks and building understanding feel the same for a while and then diverge sharply. A memorised move works in the position it came from and nowhere else, whereas knowing why it worked gives you something that transfers to positions you have never seen. The second kind of learning is slower at the start and much faster later.
When something goes well, spend a minute asking what made it work rather than filing it away as a success. Try to say the reason in one sentence. If you cannot, you have found the useful question rather than a failure.
Which of your successes have you never bothered to explain?
