The accompanist supports the song by hearing what the soloist needs next.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
Supporting someone well is an act of listening rather than an act of skill. The player behind the singer is not following orders; they are half a second ahead, reading breath and hesitation and adjusting so the person in front can do what they are trying to do. The work is invisible when done properly, which is the point, and it takes more attention than leading does.
Look for one place this week where your job is to make someone else’s easier. Watch what they are about to need rather than waiting to be asked, and be content with the result showing up as their ease rather than your effort.
