A ritual becomes welcoming when newcomers can understand how to join it.
GRATITUDE
GRATITUDE
A tradition that only insiders can follow is a wall with a nice pattern on it. The regulars know when to stand, what the phrases mean, and which parts are optional, and none of that is written down anywhere, so a newcomer spends the whole occasion a beat behind and slightly ashamed. That is rarely intended and is exactly what keeps groups the same size.
Explain what is happening before it happens, briefly and without fuss, whenever someone new is present. Say what is expected and what is not. A short sentence in the right place is the difference between a guest and a spectator.
