The hot pavement makes shade a shared resource instead of a decorative feature.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Shade is scenery until the day it becomes survival. In real heat a tree or an awning stops being a nice touch and becomes something people need and queue for. Which streets have it and which do not becomes a question about who is expected to walk there. Comfort and necessity are not fixed categories, and weather moves the line.

Notice the shaded stretches on a route you take often, and who is sitting in them. If you have any say over a space, plant something or leave the awning down. A small piece of shelter is a real contribution on a hot day.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Whose necessity is something you enjoy as a simple comfort?
