The familiar bowl becomes valuable through meals its maker never imagined.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

An object’s meaning gets written after it leaves the workshop. Whoever made the bowl imagined it holding something and could not have known about the particular breakfasts, the illness it carried soup through, the child who used it for years. Value accumulates in use rather than in manufacture. The maker starts the story and other people finish it.

Use the good things rather than saving them for an occasion that keeps not arriving. If you make things for people, let go of how they will be used. And when something ordinary has been with you a long time, notice what it has quietly been part of.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

How is something you made being used in ways you never planned?
