The message marked urgent may contain a delay that began far from your desk.

Urgency is often just a debt being passed along. Somewhere upstream a decision sat for three weeks, and by the time it reaches you the remaining time is short, so the request arrives wearing an emergency label it did not originally have. The pressure is real, but it is not evidence that you are behind.

Before you rearrange your day, ask when the deadline was set and where the time went. Sometimes the honest answer changes what is possible, and sometimes it simply lets you help without absorbing the panic. Speed borrowed from someone else’s delay tends to cost more than it saves.
