A family tradition changes whenever a new person is allowed to add something.

Traditions are usually described as fixed, and almost none of them are. Someone married in and brought a dish, someone moved abroad and the date shifted, someone was ill one year and the whole thing was simplified and stayed simplified. Letting a newcomer contribute is what keeps the tradition a living arrangement rather than a re-enactment.
At the next family occasion, invite the newest person to add one thing of their own and let it stand even if it sits oddly at first. Ask what their household used to do. Traditions that can absorb people last longer than traditions that only test them.
