The great hope of society is individual character.

Systems, rules and institutions matter, and they are all operated by people who can choose to be careful or not. Every safeguard has a point where somebody decides whether to look properly, tell the truth, or do the job when nobody is checking. That is why character is not a private ornament but the thing everything else rests on. It is also the part that cannot be legislated into existence.

You are one of those people somewhere. Find the place this week where your work is unchecked and do it properly anyway. The whole arrangement is made of decisions of about that size.
