Liberty exists in proportion to wholesome restraint.

— Daniel Webster

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Freedom without limits collapses into whoever is strongest doing as they like, which is not freedom for anybody else. Rules, kept sensible, are what open a wide space everyone can move in. The same holds in a single life: a person with no structure ends up with fewer real options, because everything gets spent on whatever was loudest that hour. Restraint is what buys the room.

Look for one place where a lack of structure is costing you choices rather than giving you them. Set the plain rule and keep it for a fortnight. Notice how much freer a week feels once a few things stop being decided from scratch.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which rule you keep has actually made you freer?
