All government,—indeed, every human benefit and enjoyment, every virtue and every prudent act,—is founded on compromise and barter.

— Edmund Burke

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Nothing worth having comes without something given up in exchange. Every arrangement between people, from a treaty to a marriage, is built from concessions neither side would have chosen alone, and refusing to trade is less purity than an inability to live with others. Even private virtues are compromises: patience trades speed for peace, honesty trades comfort for trust. Purity of position is available only to those with no responsibilities.

In a disagreement this week, work out what you would actually accept rather than restating what you want. Name one thing you can concede without damage. That is usually the move that unsticks everything else.
