When bad men combine, the good must associate; else they will fall one by one, an unpitied sacrifice in a contemptible struggle.

— Edmund Burke

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

People acting badly tend to coordinate, while people acting decently tend to assume that being right is enough on its own. It is not, and the result is that each one stands alone at a different moment and gets picked off separately. Organising feels distasteful to anyone who would rather just do their work well. That distaste is exactly what makes the isolation possible.

If you can see something wrong at work or in your community, find the two or three others who see it too before you say anything. Agree what each of you will do. One voice gets managed; three at once is a different conversation.
