Since it is Reason which shapes and regulates all other things, it ought not itself to be left in disorder.

— Epictetus

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

The instrument you use to sort out everything else is your own thinking, which means a disordered mind quietly disorders every judgement it makes. People will spend months organising a house, a diary, a set of accounts, and no time at all on the faculty doing the organising. Tiredness, resentment and hurry are not neutral conditions. They bend the measurements while presenting themselves as clear sight.

Before any decision of consequence, check the state of the thing making it. If you are angry, hungry or short of sleep, the honest move is usually to wait, and waiting costs less than the decision you would have made.

What keeps your own thinking clear when everything else is messy?
