Reading maketh a full man, conference a ready man, and writing an exact man.

— Francis Bacon

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Three different activities build three different capacities, and no one of them substitutes for the others. Reading fills you with material; talking makes you quick, because you have to answer before you are ready; writing makes you exact, since the page shows at once where your thinking was vague. Most people lean on whichever one they enjoy and then wonder why they are full but inarticulate, or fluent but imprecise.

Work out which of the three you have been skipping. If it is writing, take the idea you feel surest about and put it in a page of plain prose, and see how much of it survives.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What would writing it down force you to make exact?
