The sun, which passeth through pollutions and itself remains as pure as before.

— Francis Bacon

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Some things can go through what is foul without taking it on. A person can spend their day among cruelty, gossip or plain squalor and come out unchanged, not because they were untouched by it but because there is nothing in them for it to stick to. That is not innocence, which is simply not having met the thing. It is something sturdier, and it is built rather than given.

Notice what you pick up from the rooms you pass through. If one leaves a residue, put something between you and it, or find a way to wash it off at the end of the day.
