Grace is to the body what good sense is to the mind.

— François de La Rochefoucauld

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Grace is not decoration; it is the body doing the right amount, without waste or strain. Good sense is the same economy applied to thinking: no flourish, no forcing, the plain proportionate response to what is actually in front of you. Both are noticed mainly by their absence, which is why neither gets much praise. Fussing is obvious and ease looks like nothing at all.

Look for where you are overdoing it, in a sentence, a gesture, a piece of work. Take something out rather than adding, and see whether the thing does its job better with less on it.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Where does ease show in you more than effort does?
