It is more easy to be wise for others than for ourselves.

— François de La Rochefoucauld

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

You can see another person’s situation whole, because you are not inside the feeling of it. Their choice looks obvious: leave, apologise, ask, stop. In your own case the same clarity is unavailable, not because you are less intelligent about yourself but because you are standing too close and every option carries a weight it does not carry for an observer. The distance is doing the work you mistake for insight.

Borrow the distance deliberately. Write your own situation out as though it belonged to a friend, then answer it as you would answer them, and take the advice more seriously than you usually take your own.
