Nothing is given so profusely as advice.

— François de La Rochefoucauld

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Advice is free to produce and costs the giver nothing if it turns out wrong, which is why there is so much of it. Everyone has an opinion about your decision because having one requires no effort and no exposure. The scarcity is on the other side: people who know your actual circumstances, who will still be there when the consequences land, and who have done something like it themselves.

Before you take anyone’s view on something that matters, ask what it would cost them to be wrong. Weigh most heavily the few who have a stake in your outcome, and let the rest be conversation rather than instruction.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Whose advice have you collected without using any of it?
