Silence is the best resolve for him who distrusts himself.

— François de La Rochefoucauld

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

When you are not sure of your ground, saying nothing costs less than anything else available. The unsure talker overstates, because uncertainty comes out as emphasis, and then has to defend a position they never held. Silence keeps your options intact and gives you the room to find out what you think. It also has the advantage that nobody can quote it back to you.

In the next meeting where you feel out of your depth, hold off until you have a question rather than a verdict. Ask it plainly, listen to the answer, and notice how much more you know than you would have if you had been talking.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

When would saying nothing serve you better than speaking?
