The defects of the mind, like those of the countenance, increase with age.

— François de La Rochefoucauld

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Small faults do not stay small if nothing interrupts them. A slight impatience at thirty, practised daily and never contradicted, is a settled temper at sixty, by which time it feels less like a fault than a personality. Nothing about years does this on its own. It is repetition, plus the fact that fewer people bother to tell you as you get older and harder to tell.

Take the fault you have been treating as a quirk and work on it now rather than later, while it is still loose enough to move. And keep one person around who is allowed to say what nobody else will.
