When our hatred is too keen it places us beneath those we hate.

— François de La Rochefoucauld

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Hating somebody hard enough hands them a share of your attention that they did not earn and cannot be made to pay for. You start thinking in their terms, rehearsing their arguments in order to defeat them, arranging your day around avoiding or encountering them. Meanwhile they are usually elsewhere, unbothered. The position is a losing one not because they deserve better but because of what it costs to hold.

Notice how much of your week the person is occupying. Take one concrete step to reduce the contact and the rehearsing, and put the freed attention somewhere it does something for you.
