A handful of good life is worth a bushel of learning.

— George Herbert

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Knowing a great deal and living well are separate achievements, and only one of them shows up in how you treat people. Learning is easier to acquire and to display, which is why it gets mistaken for the more important thing. A person who is reliable, honest and kind in small matters has something no amount of reading produces. The reading is worth having, but it is not a substitute.

Look at how you have been spending your improvement effort. If it is mostly input, books and courses, swap some of it for practice: one difficult conversation handled well, one commitment kept when it would be easy not to.
