Take the selfishness out of this world and there would be more happiness than we should know what to do with.

— Josh Billings

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Most of what makes life difficult is not scarcity but the way people behave around it. There is generally enough of the thing being fought over, and the fighting is what costs everyone, including the winners. This is not a claim that generosity would solve everything, because some shortages are real. It is a claim that a surprising portion of ordinary misery is manufactured rather than inherited.

You cannot fix the general case, and you can stop contributing to it where you actually are. Give way once this week where you would normally hold your ground. Watch what it costs you and what it saves everyone else.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Where does your self-interest cost other people more than you notice?
