If you wish me to weep, you yourself must feel grief.

— Horace

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Feeling cannot be produced in another person by technique. Audiences, colleagues and children all detect the gap between what is performed and what is actually there, usually without being able to say how. If you are not moved by the thing you are presenting, nobody else will be, and adding emphasis widens the gap rather than closing it. Conviction is the only transmissible part.

Before you try to persuade anyone of something, check whether you believe it yourself. If you do not, find the part you do believe and speak only from there. If you do, stop performing and simply say it, since the feeling carries further than any delivery.
