Health is the second blessing that we mortals are capable of,—a blessing that money cannot buy.

— Izaak Walton

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Health is the one advantage that cannot be purchased outright, only tended, and sometimes not even that. When you have it you barely notice it; it feels like the neutral background rather than a gift. Its absence rearranges everything, which is the hard way of learning what it was worth. None of this is a matter of merit, since bodies fail people who did everything carefully.

Since it cannot be bought, the sensible response is to spend a little of it well rather than hoard or ignore it. Sleep, walk, eat something that resembles food, and when you are well enough, use the day for something you actually wanted.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What does your body still do well that you never thank?
