Light itself is a great corrective. A thousand wrongs and abuses that are grown in darkness disappear, like owls and bats, before the light of day.

— James A. Garfield

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Bad practice depends on not being looked at. Bring an honest account into the open, with names and numbers, and a surprising amount of it simply stops, because the people doing it were relying on nobody checking. The same works on your own conduct: habits you would rather not describe out loud tend to weaken as soon as you describe them.

Take the thing you have been quietly not mentioning, at work or at home, and put it in daylight this week. Say it plainly to one person who has standing to hear it, and let the fact of being seen do part of the work.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What would end on its own if you simply said it openly?
