Do not wait for extraordinary circumstances to do good actions; try to use ordinary situations.

— Jean Paul

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Waiting for a fitting occasion is how most good intentions expire. The dramatic chance to help almost never arrives, while the ordinary ones come past several times a day and are easy to miss because they look too small to count. A lift given, a message answered, a person included: these are not warm-ups for real kindness, they are what it consists of.

Look at your day tomorrow and find the three moments where a small decency is available. Take one of them deliberately, and stop reserving yourself for the occasion that would make it feel significant.
