A complete and generous education fits a man to perform justly, skilfully and magnanimously all the offices of peace and war.

— John Milton

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

An education worth the name is not job training. Its measure is whether it leaves you able to act well across the whole range of what a life asks, in ordinary times and in emergencies, in public matters and private ones. Skill in one narrow thing is useful and does not meet that standard. The test is competence in the situations you did not choose.

Ask what you would be unable to handle if circumstances shifted sharply, and pick one of those gaps. Learning something with no connection to your work is a reasonable use of this year.
