Justice discards party, friendship, kindred, and is always, therefore, represented as blind.

— Joseph Addison

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Fairness requires setting aside exactly the things that matter most to you: the people you love, the side you are on, the ones who share your name. That is why it is hard, not why it is cold. Every attachment supplies a reason why this particular case is different, and the reasons are often sincere. Blindness here means refusing the information that would bend the decision.

Where you are deciding something that touches someone close to you, write down what you would do if the names were different. If the two answers diverge, hand the decision to somebody else.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Where have you bent a judgment because you liked someone?
