Let no act be done at haphazard, nor otherwise than according to the finished rules that govern its kind.

— Marcus Aurelius

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Every kind of work has a right way of being done, and doing it any old way is where most poor results come from. Not rigidity, simply that a letter, a repair or a conversation each has a form that fits it, and ignoring the form produces the version that has to be done again. Haphazard effort is usually more effort in total.

Take one recurring task you have been improvising and settle its shape once: the steps, the order, what finished looks like. Then follow that for a month. Most of the fatigue in ordinary work comes from deciding the same things over and over.
