Don’t put too fine a point to your wit for fear it should get blunted.

— Miguel de Cervantes

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Cleverness can be refined past the point of usefulness. An argument honed too fine is fragile, a joke sharpened too far stops being funny, and a plan made too exact cannot survive contact with an ordinary Tuesday. Some bluntness is strength, because it tolerates knocks that a fine edge cannot.

Take something you have been refining and ask whether the last three rounds of polish improved it or only made it more delicate. Send the sturdy version. Save your fine edge for the places where precision genuinely earns its fragility.
