In the one hand he is carrying a stone, while he shows the bread in the other.

— Plautus

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Some offers are made with the other hand out of sight. The friendliness is real enough on the surface, and the harm is being prepared at the same time by the same person, which is what makes it hard to see: you are looking at the bread. What someone does when the offer is declined tells you which hand was the real one.

When a proposal seems generous beyond reason, slow down and ask what happens if you say no. Anyone offering in good faith takes a refusal easily. Pressure appearing at that moment is your answer.
