Moral good is a practical stimulus; it is no sooner seen than it inspires an impulse to practise.

— Plutarch

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Seeing someone behave well produces an urge to do the same, quickly and almost physically, before any reasoning gets involved. That is why one decent act in a bad room changes the room, and why watching generosity makes people generous for an hour afterwards. Good conduct spreads in a way that argument does not.

Since that is how it works, stop trying to talk people into better behaviour and let them see some. Do the thing plainly and without commentary. And put yourself near people whose conduct you would like to catch.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Whose decency made you want to act better that day?
