Perseverance is more prevailing than violence; and many things which cannot be overcome when they are together, yield themselves up when taken little by little.

— Plutarch

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Steady pressure beats force on most problems, because what will not shift all at once often comes apart in pieces. A debt, a manuscript, a strained relationship or an overgrown garden all resist a single heroic assault and yield to repeated modest attention. The trick is dividing the thing rather than attacking it.

Take whatever has defeated your bursts of effort and cut it into pieces small enough to be boring. Do one piece a day and keep a simple record. Progress made that way is slow and it almost never reverses.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which obstacle would yield if you took it in pieces?
