He bids fair to grow wise who has discovered that he is not so.

— Publilius Syrus

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Realising you are not as wise as you assumed is the first real step towards being so. Until then, every new piece of information gets fitted into a picture you are already sure of, and there is nothing for wisdom to take hold of. The discovery is uncomfortable, and it is the opening.

If you have recently been embarrassed by how wrong you were about something, take it as progress rather than as evidence against yourself. Ask what else you might be holding with more confidence than the evidence supports. Then go looking in the areas where you feel most certain.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What did you recently discover you did not understand at all?
