Duty grows everywhere, like children, like grass.

— Ralph Waldo Emerson

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Obligations arrive without being planted. Every relationship, job and kindness generates new ones, and they multiply faster than you can discharge them, so the state of being fully caught up never arrives. Expecting to clear the list before you start living is a way of never starting.

Since it grows back regardless, the question is which duties you tend and which you let run. Choose the two or three that genuinely belong to you and do those properly. Let the rest be done imperfectly or not at all, and stop treating the overgrowth as evidence of your failure.
