Railway traveling is not traveling at all; it is merely being sent to a place, and very little different from becoming a parcel.

— John Ruskin

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

There is a difference between going somewhere and being conveyed there. Speed removes the middle, and the middle is where most of the noticing happens: the changes in the land, the sense of distance actually covered, the chance of something unplanned. What you gain in hours you lose in having been anywhere.

Once in a while, take the slow version deliberately. Walk part of a familiar route, or take the long way, or arrive early enough to look around before the thing begins. Efficiency is worth a great deal and it is not worth every journey.
